You're wrong, the crown of the HRE (wich didn't technically exist at that time) was a reward from the Pope to Charlemagne because he helped defend Papal States against their southern neighborgs. At the samme time, there was no Emperor at Constantinople. Irene of Athens was on the throne and wasn't recognized by the pope, because she was a woman, but also because blinded her own son to keep the power. They needed an emperor for christianity, and he chose to give the title to Charlemagne as a reward. He crowned Charlemagne and the HRE was born (or, at least, an early version of it).
Mal, do you not understand how the sentence I wrote works? I wasn't saying that Josef Mengele looks like Patch Adams. It's a common literary device to show that something is extremely ____ by comparing it with something that is known to be similarly ____ and then saying the first thing makes the 2nd thing look like a 3rd thing that exemplifies the opposite. There's probably a term for it but I don't know what. In this case everyone knows Mengele did abominable horrifying things. A smaller number of people know that what the Japanese did to the Chinese was actually much worse than anything the infamous Nazi doctor did. Patch Adams is known for his wonderful bedside manner and humanitarian nature. By comparing Mengele to Adams I'm showing that the Japanese actions in China were extremely bad. Sometimes I feel like I'm not on an English-language website.
Thank you for accepting Boulder Dam for Hoover. That's what my parents always called it and the name stuck with me, even though the official name changed in 1947.
As a cynical Englishman this comment is both very true and very sad to me. Regarding why '66 is so special, England is historically one of the most important footballing nations (where the modern game originated, and where arguably the most famous domestic league is), so the fact that we have only won the WC once (and over 50 years ago) is very significant.
I have no idea and don't really care to find out why some would perceive this as special but England was my first guess just because I expected them to make a big deal out of it.
I guessed that QM was feeling tricksy and figured those of us who didn't know the answer would spend all our time typing in every country we could think of, forgetting that the UK countries are separate when it comes to soccer. Same with Livingstone. I wonder how many gave up without adding the e at the end. Fun quiz.
Yeah this is like the "which city hosted the olympics in this specific year" type of questions, more about having lists of data in your head and less about knowledge of history.
The only time I ever saw my Chinese friend go into a furious tirade was at the mention of the Japanese. I remember him getting louder and eventually shouting "It's because the Japanese NEVER apologize for ANYTHING" while slamming his fist onto the table twice. And you know what? He was right. The Nanjing Massacre and other atrocities in the Second Sino-Japanese War along with their victims and perpetrators have not been properly addressed like the Holocaust and various other Nazi war crimes have been. It's a shame the recognition is so low even here.
I feel like this could be a Bob Dylan song but when you look just a little way back in almost ANY culture's history, you're going to find blood and violence.
Nanjing especially is an illustration of the power of the propoganda machine. If you don't want your soldiers to empathise with the 'enemy', you've got to dehumanise them. That's how you end up with babies on bayonets. Brutal but essentially the same business as Nazi Germany or the US in Vietnam. Or the world and slavery. Or just women full stop.
But then if you want to get really appalled there's the millions of women, especially of eastern background, sold as sex slaves en mass in the nineteenth century (and still continues today).
England sure has an interesting fascination with years ending in '66. Between the Norman Conquest, the London Fire, and England's World Cup win, if the year ends in '66, just assume it had something to do with England.
Who or what is Stanley finding L************??? I am looking it up now... Never heard of this event. Funny isn't it that every now and again something comes up that you have never been taught or have never come across before..
It's not asking for the name of the place in Venice, it's asking for the Saint whose remains were supposedly stolen. A Saint whose name of course isn't Marco "literally everywhere".
I generally agree that it's good policy to accept the name in English and in the language that is relevant to the question, so I'm all in favour of accepting San Marco, but he's literally only called that in one single language, which is Italian. It's Marc in French, Markus in German and Dutch, Μᾶρκος in Greek, Marcos in Spanish and Portuguese... Maybe there's another language than Italian where it's "Marco", but I literally can't find one!
technically sputnik wasn't the first man made object in space we accidentally launched a manhole cover into space with a nuclear bomb a few months earlier
the u.s. government probably didn't want anyone to know that they'd been testing nuclear weapons in the sewers so they denied using nukes to shoot manhole covers into space lol
Justice League made Batman vs Superman look like Citizen Kane.
Wayne Brady makes Bryant Gumbel look like Malcolm X.
Malbaby makes Donald Trump look like William Shakespeare.
Relaaaax! Just kidding! Besides, I'm sure there are plenty of cynical Englishmen who feel that way.
