Brazzaville/Kinshasa for the bordering capitals?

They are separated by the Congo River.

Right. That means the Congo river is the border between the cities and therefore they border each other.

The Congo and Ubangi rivers also form the border between Rep of the Congo and DR Congo. Following your logic then we'd have to say that those countries don't border each other.

I agree, that's a good point.

I don't know. Following your logic we could say that the US and Portugal border each other because only the Atlantic Ocean separates them. I'm being facetious, of course, but I think you can make the case that if any body of water separates 2 cities, countries, land masses, they don't technically border each other. They both border the same body of water.

No that's not correct at all. In the oceans there are clear demarcations between international waters and a country's exclusive economic zone, in most cases anyway, I'm aware that there are a number of disputes. So there is no sense that one could say the US boards Portugal because those boundaries are well defined for those countries and they aren't anywhere close to each other.

In the case of lakes that are on borders, a border will usually be drawn on maps over the surface of the lake, and in that case you can say the countries border each other (Canada and the US over the Great Lakes for instance).

Rivers are used as borders all over the world, and those countries are recognized as sharing a border. I'm sorry, but your argument makes no sense.

Spot on. I couldn't figure out why it wouldn't accept Kinshasa.

There is no bridge connecting Kinshasa and Brazzaville, so they do not officially border each other.

Because boats don't exist? Many borders are uncrossable due to political or physical barriers. Since when does that mean those places don't border each other?

I'll give my $.02 worth on the Kinshasa/Brazzaville debate. The countries clearly border each other - there is an official border in the middle of the Congo River. I can't find any information on if either or both cities extend to the border of their respective country, or stop at the bank of the Congo River. I think if the cities extend to their National border (in the middle of the Congo River), then they border each other. If they only extend to the bank of the river, they do not. :)

You make a good point but after checking Google Maps, the two cities do appear to border each other in the southwest.

According to Google Maps they border each other in the southwest where the river is more narrow.

I typed Georgetown first before smacking myself on the head and typing Monrovia. Then smacked myself once again when I saw Washington.

When Nusantara replaces Jakarta as Indonesia's capital in August 2024 (cue a heap of capital city quiz rewrites), then both it and Bandar Seri Begawan will be in Kalimantan, aka Borneo.

Not strictly true. The island of Borneo contains both the region of Indonesia known as Kalimantan, and the sovereign state of Brunei (as well as two Malaysian states.) In no way will Bandar become a part of Kalimantan, which is not also known as Borneo. They would become valid answers for this quiz though.

I should get out more…

The island of Borneo is also sometimes referred to as Kalimantan, because that's the Indonesian name for the entire island, not just the part that is controlled by Indonesia. So it's not wrong to call the island Kalimantan, even though Borneo is the name commonly used in the English language.

Maybe it's even more necessary for me to get out more... :)

What's your cut-off for BC/BCE & AD/CE? I feel as if 1500 is well into the common era, and therefore doesn't necessitate the added "AD".

Why would you leave this comment? You want the quiz changed to include possible ambiguity where currently there is none?

Rats -- if I had taken this quiz in early 2006, my answer "Koror" would have worked for the 5-letter 2-o question.
