I would assume that Niger makes the list only because one stumbles upon it while trying to type in Nigeria on any given quiz. It's probably not among the most well known African countries in its own right.
I'm surprised by several of the answers. I would have thought that Kenya and Ethiopia would be more of a house-hold name than Morocco, Niger and Nigeria. Kenya and Ethiopia are both big in Olympic running and often portrayed on TV (animal planet, discovery channel etc).
Nigeria is a well known country because it's the most populous country in Africa and there are Nigerians in many European countries. Also, Nigerian email scams are pretty infamous.
I definitely expected to see Kenya up there though.
Nigeria is well known, Morocco is well known - especially amongst Europeans. I’m surprised Tunisia (another well known tourist destination for Europeans), Kenya and Ethiopia weren’t there and the Congo’s, Algeria and Sudan were. Definitely influenced by jetpunkers rather than regular joes.
You're right, French2010. The first time I took the Countries of Africa Quiz I missed Nigeria because I didn't know Niger existed and I thought it was just a type-in.
How do you type Nigeria without it just giving you Niger, and then having to start over to type Nigeria? Maybe type "nigeia" and then go back and put the "r"?
Yes, it will automatically be accepted as you type Nigeria, just as the United Kingdom (UK) will go down for anyone seeking Ukraine first, Guinea before Guinea-Bissau, USA before Usamabinladenistan.
I wondered too why sudan made the list. I would ve thought of ethiopia or somalia. (with items about famine and the conditions there, I think besides egypt, for the piramids, they were the only african countries I had heard of when I was little. Ow and south africa.). And sort of expected lesotho too, since who doesnt type lesotho right after africa. ( but yea you should be aware of its existence) I thought rwanda perhaps would be on there aswell, since it had a lot of news exposure years back.
but yea, this is not the average public, but quiztakers. So that does change things a bit. (like niger being on here and both congos, that is obviously the result of quizmechanics)
countries I learned when I was a little older, like 8 years old, was mauritius, cause that was where the dodo came from and cameroon cause that was the name of a soccer club I heard often. And yes kenya cause they run fast and have the masai people
Though it wouldn't be within the first 10 African countries I'd guess I've seen that it's an often guessed answer in Africa-related quizzes so I always try that one early. Still I would've expected more similar ones like Zambia, Gambia & Namibia.
It is there because it is a massive island... (bigger than france, and more than two times as big as new zealand or the UK, to give you some perspective) and is obviously easily differentiated from the rest of africa.
It's interesting to compare the Countries of Africa answers to the Countries of the World answers. At the moment the numbers on Countries of the World are SA 88% (9% less), Egypt 87% (10% less), Madagascar 75% (17% less), Morocco 69% (22% less), Niger 69% (24% less), Dem Rep Congo 65% (27% less), Congo 64% (27% less), and Sudan 62% (29% less). If this quiz was based on the Countries of the World quiz, then Libya (60%) and Kenya (59%) would bump Nigeria (58%) and Algeria (57%) off these answers.
Funny that Sudan is on the list but not South Sudan. I always type those together, but apparently not everyone else does. Sudan is at the bottom, though, so maybe S. Sudan is not too far down the list.
honestly, i dont know if this happens to anyone else, but I ALWAYS forget the most obvious ones. Like I got madagascar and sudan, but missed south africa???
I definitely expected to see Kenya up there though.
