Hey all. I know I've done a couple of community-input blogs recently, but they are really quite fun.
This time, I want to see how well JetPunk can craft its own chess variant; that is, changing the game's rules or setup in any way.
Feel free to be as creative as you want—fairy chess pieces, growing or shrinking the board, giving the board an irregular shape, different rules, more players, even adding extra dimensions—anything is possible.
After about a week, I'll try to post the new board here, using my own discretion for overlapping changes. Have fun! :D
Though late, I have come to update the board. I've thrown out changes that are too drastic or conflict with others, but besides that I believe they're mostly here.
Pieces
Amazon: Moves as a Queen or Knight.
Cannon: Hops over a piece horizontally or vertically, not capturing it, and then continuing on until it reaches another piece, which it captures.
Duck: Both unable to capture and unable to be captured. After every turn, the players must move the duck of their color to any square on the board.
Nuke: May only be used once per game, and only after the first five turns. After being placed on any square, except one where it may capture the King or Amazon, it takes out every piece, even friendly ones, in a 3 x 3 grid.
Zanzibar (Freddy Mercury): If used, roll a die. If the die shows one or two, pick an enemy pawn to remove from the game. If the die shows any other number, gameplay proceeds as normal.
Rules
- There exists no Check, nor Checkmate, within the game. Kings may move into Check, and the game ends once the King in captured.
- The Amazon may not attack, nor threaten, the eight squares immediately surrounding her.
- Once a Rook captures another Rook, you may place the captured Rook atop the other.
- Amazons that capture the H8 Rook automatically demote to a Wildebeest (Knight + Camel).
- Upon losing your last pawn, you may swap any of your pieces' positions with any enemy piece's.
Every time a move is made, a 120-sided die is rolled. If it results in a 78, the moving piece is instantly transported to the Backrooms and the game is paused until A: the player who owns the lost piece rolls a 113 or B: the other player rolls a 53. If the former happens, the piece is returned and the game continues as normal, if the latter happens though, one of the players, chosen by a coin flip, is banished to Yemen and never allowed to return or play chess ever again, where they can think about what they have done
