Wrong ColoHarpare.........It may seem surprising, but the question of whether or not a bird is considered a “songbird” is not determined entirely by a demonstrated ability to sing. There are parrots that can sing along with Sesame Street (personal observation), but they are not songbirds. Ravens rarely sing at all, but they are songbirds nonetheless. Starlings do sing with their squeaky little voices, and they are indeed songbirds as is the Myna......http://www.second-opinion-doc.com/the-reasons-starlings-are-considered-songbirds.html
The Australian Magpie has a whole range of songs. Early morning and evening they sing with lovely flute like calls in set patterns that change from time to time.
Technically, but this quiz isn't based on taxonomic definitions. No one thinks of magpies as being songbirds, even though they're in the passeri family.
Wow, five years later I am chastened. Mastodon will work now. Although, in truth, mastodons are not closely related to elephants, having diverged 27 million years ago.
Yes, I tried mantis, when it didnt accept, I guess it must be something else, so tried moonfish, and all sorts of combo trying to remember mola mola (which is actually called moonfish is dutch, but isnt the same as the above moonfish)
And meerkat definitely should be accepted, I thought I was going crazy trying all types of spelling. (Mongoose, have heard the name before but if you would ve said it was a type of moose I would ve believed you...)
I think the “common” in the clue is supposed to hint at Mallard and it's what should come to most people's mind first. But if the Quizmaster really wants to make sure, he could change it to “most common” (this is true worldwide), seeing how there are quite a few duck species with green-headed males.
I agree with the other comments regarding the mockingbird. There are tons of songbirds out there that imitate other animals' calls, certainly not an exclusive trait to mockingbirds. How about changing the clue to “Songbird named after its ability to imitate other animals' calls” or something like that?
I mean Musk Ox, dammit
'singing' its almost a yodel.
And meerkat definitely should be accepted, I thought I was going crazy trying all types of spelling. (Mongoose, have heard the name before but if you would ve said it was a type of moose I would ve believed you...)
Please add: "fictional, yellow characters from Despicable Me" (Minions). It would be so funny.
