I've never understand why we do this distinction for Micronesia and not for other countries: French Republic, Federal Republic of Germany, Swiss Confederation, Kingdom of Belgium, etc. which are the official names of those countries...
siocnarfus: I'd say a more relevant comparison is to the name of the USA - sometimes just called America or the United States instead of its full name. But I do see where you're coming from.
Traditionally, on JetPunk, Micronesia has been accepted without the "F.S." or other references thereto, in much the same way Congo is accepted without the insistence that it begins with D or R. The instructions even specify the use of "short names" furthering the notion that Micronesia ought to be accepted.
The Congos ARE considered as starting with D and R on this site. And I think Micronesia is considered as starting with an F to differentiate it from the whole pacific region also called Micronesia. Calling the country "Micronesia" is like calling the USA "America". It completely disregards all of the other countries in the region.
Absolutely - regardless of these comparisons, the quiz clearly specifies that it uses the Short Name according to Wikipedia, so Federated States of should be dropped and just leave with Micronesia, as per https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Micronesia
The country in the Pacific should be alphabetized as "Micronesia, Federated States of", IMO. Just as it should be "Macedonia, Former Yugoslav Republic of". Just as it should be "Gambia, The". Just my 2 cents.
Calling the FSM "Micronesia" is basically the same as calling the USA "America". Everyone says it, but it is wrong as it disregards all other countries in the region.
