I think most of the ones I missed were cities in Argentina/Chile/Uruguay/Brazil that I hadn't heard but rarely before. and two in Australia that I wasn't aware had more than a million people.
There were a lot of obscure cities in the 1 million - 1.2 million range. With the latest update, I changed the criteria for inclusion to eliminate them.
The earth is really top-heavy. There are no more of these large cities farther South than 38.00o degrees. ........ Athens is 38.00o degrees North, yet look at all the cities of over a 1,000,000 North of Athens.
It doesn't, actually. The quiz uses urban area population, not city proper population. If we don't count the surrounding cities, Santos has circa 420,000 people only.
Yeah, cruise Hauraki Gulf, walk Waitakere Ranges, climb Rangitoto, kayak out to Rangitoto, climb Sky Tower, jump off Sky Tower (wearing the harness so you're good for...), Harbour Bridge climb, walk around Waiheke Islands walkways and vineyards... tschutzer, it's time you popped over here for a weekend :)
There are plenty of reasons to visit NZ, regardless of where you're from. Having travelled to every inhabited continent but Africa, I think I have a fair if not exhaustive idea of what the world has to offer, and I can honestly say New Zealand is one of my favourite countries. There really aren’t many places as consistently beautiful anywhere. Plus all its varied beauty is wonderfully concentrated – pristine temperate rainforest, explosive geysers, alpine lakes fed by glaciers and epic expanses of sandy beach are often right next to each other. And that’s to say nothing of its vineyards, cheeses and other delicious produce, charming towns and fascinating Maori history and culture.
The source jetpunk tends to use (citypopulation.de) usually goes by urban aglomeration populations. So even though FLORIPA has more than 1 million people on its metropolitan area, the source caps only the population inside the island, because it's separated from the rest by oceanic water.
I was seriously doubting the average at 16, but I see the quiz is recently reset ( only taken 375 times since reset) I guess that explains it. The bottom 7 arent ones you often comes across here, so would have estimated the average a bit lower.
Not literally doubting the results or claiming everybody cheated like you see in some comments. I am hardly ever surprise at averages, actually, often it is lower than I expected. This one really surprised me.
Good quiz! Only missed Santos and Rosario which I'd never heard of and definitely didn't know were over 1.2 million, but got lucky guessing some of the other South American cities where I only had a vague idea of their location
Hey, I think you should include Antananarivo in this ! Having lived there for a couple years, i can attest it's populated by at least 3 million people (but id oubt there is an accurate counting...)
You said above that the ones excluded by moving the threshold to 1.2 were obscure. That was a while ago and maybe the excluded cities were different, but Valparaiso and Mendoza are probably at least as well known as Rosario and Cordoba. (And just because I don't know anything about San Miguel de Tucuman doesn't make that obscure either.)
I think that miss Campinas and Florinopolis, both have more that 1 million in metropolitan zone, and Campinas have more that 1 million only the city, and Mendoza in Argentina too.
what do you consider a reason to travel to? only work? or if you have family somewhere?

Valparaiso, Mendoza, San Miguel de Tucuman
