The designation of famous cities is primarily based on cityquiz.io and quizzes about cities in African countries. The population and rarity scores listed on cityquiz.io are provided for reference. Please note that the renown of a city may not only be attributed to its population and economy but also to historical events, historic architecture, tourism, etc.

Some cities in the autonomous regions of Spain and Portugal in Africa have been marked.
Some cities that belong to African countries are not geographically located in Africa.
A really fun and challenging quiz. I have a couple of suggestions based on the strict geographical definition of Africa. Firstly omit Sharm el Sheikh as, though it is Egyptian, it is in Asia. Secondly, consider adding significant towns which are in African territories of other countries, such as the Canary Islands, Madeira, Socotra etc. (You have already included St Helena and the French territories.) I would suggest Las Palmas, Santa Cruz (Tenerife), Melilla, Funchal and Ceuta might meet your standards.
Thank you for suggestion. I have indeed treated the Spanish and Portuguese autonomies and Overseas France differently. Since these autonomies are closer to the mainland, I included them in my European cities quiz. As for Sharm el Sheikh, placing it in the competitive Asian category, it would stand very little chance of being selected. These definitions are admittedly not strict enough for a geographical definition of Africa, but 'famous' is not a strict concept either. As long as the quiz-takers understand it correctly, that’s sufficient. Regarding Tetouan and Ceuta, Nador and Melilla, these pairs can indeed be confusing. I might add these cities as non-selectable grey circles and add some instructions.
I liked the quiz a lot. I got 78 but missed a handful of historical cities I should have gotten. I thought that Tagmadert might make it and a few cities on Mayotte/Reunion would have been on (in gray).
