Surprised there's no question here about whether Cyprus is part of Europe or Asia :) but I can't blame you if you want to avoid reigniting that debate. At any rate, this is a good quiz!
No, Cyprus is one island, split into four jurisdictions: Cyprus (the internationally recognised government, in the south of the island); the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (in the North, but not part of Turkey); the demilitarised Green Zone between the two; the British Sovereign Base Areas (Akrotiri and Dhekelia). So there's a fair stretch of Mediterranean between Cyprus and Turkey.
They have a population under a 3rd of a million, no real economy apart from Turkish sex/gambling tourism, and exactly zero international recognition apart from Turkey, so they don't have much choice but to do whatever Turkey says. They have their own nominally independent multi-party ruling assembly, where, actually, the party with the most seats is in favor of reconciliation and reunification with the rest of Cyprus, but that party has only a plurality not a majority. If they ever gain a majority it will be interesting to see if Turkey does anything about it. I know the Greek Cypriots in the south are strongly in favor of reunification. If that ever happens, Greeks will outnumber Turks on the island by more than 2-to-1, which is why some Turks are resistant.
If I'm remembering my Greek mythology correctly, the city of Athens was named because Athena and Poseidon competed for it. Poseidon gave a saltwater spring and Athena gave the olive tree and they liked her gift better so they named the city after her. Ergo, Athena came before Athens.
Too easy, can be seen from the answer stats. Maybe an inclusion of "both" or "none" in the options would make it trickier. That being said, I was expecting most users who are from US to be more clueless, especially about Cyprus which is only know from the whole conflict there. Good idea though.
The British territory of Akrotiri and Dhekelia may be on the island of Cyprus, but it's not within the internationally recognised borders of the country of Cyprus, so the wording of that question needs to be adjusted slightly.
I only thought that "There we can find a..." was a bit wordy compared to the others, why not simply "Contains a..."?
Soon we will be united.
