This quiz made me lose sanity. I spent an hour of my night memorizing all of the ones in modern day Spain, where as before I could only get Cordoba, Catalonia, Madrid, and Seville. But seriously- cool map and idea! Nominated (oh, and I might've retook this quiz quite a lot to memorize....)!
whew, what a mess we made of the continent. couldn't name half of the dutch provinces. if we'd kept to the americas, quizzes like this would be easier today lmao
For the crown of Castile, realms were former independent christian (León, Navarra) or muslim (the rest) kingdoms and provinces were subdivisions of the proper kingdom of Castile.
For the crown of Aragon was the same, former muslim kingdoms (Majorca, Valencia) and christian kingdoms (Aragon and the italian kingdoms); Catalonia was a principality made from the catalan counties and a couple of marquisates.
Concerning the African possessions, Wikipedia claims in regards to the Alhucemas Islands, “Spanish rule dates back to 1559, when the Saadis ceded several territories to Spain in exchange for Spanish help against Ottoman armies.”
Were the Alhucemas part of another division in the Empire?
Looks like Spanish control was only on paper in the beginning, though de facto occupation of the islands would only start from 1673. I think it'd fair to exclude them from the quiz.
