And actually... this one has too much time. With 2:30, the country version isn't finishable, while this one is, with more than five seconds left for the best speedrunners. So I'm clearly not in favour of increasing the total amount of time, it would break all the challenge of the quiz.
this quiz is still 100% finishable by a ton of people (me included). on my friends list for the actual US states quiz i counted 13 people who were able to finish it in under 50 seconds. even on this specific quiz 4 people (me included) were able to 100% it in the allotted time!
Helpful hint: NH, NJ and NYC are a good start for points and will save you time. I have no idea why other states like the Dakotas, Carolinas, New Mexico or Rhode Island don't have the same option. Seems kind of arbitrary.
Really? People can type the states at a rate of 1 per second or faster? This is just a typing skills test, nothing more. I like the idea of this quiz, but the short time makes it a typing test, not a quiz.
And a longer timer would just make it a copy of the quiz about US States. The goal isn't to get them all (although somone achieve this objective) but to be strategic enough to get the ones that value the ost points.
Somehow, I scored 483 a little while ago. Don't ask me how. But I just discovered in the comments thread here that NH and NJ can be entered as initials. Now, I might actually break 500 or, if I really get in an ultra zone, maybe even 525.
The countries one is insane, however. Absolutely insane. No human could actually finish that one without cheating, and even then, I don't know how they would do it. It doesn't even seem like it would be possible with copying and pasting.
Actually just got 520 a couple of minutes ago. 99.3%. Wow! Surprised I could still pull that off. All the way from A through and including PA. If I am in a mega-blaze and have the presence of mind, I might be able to pull that off again and then skip a little bit and add TX and UT for 539 points, but I think that will probably just about be my maximum. That might give me 99.5%. But I at least halfway think that there are others who haven't read about the NH & NJ thing - that could skew things back.
Nevertheless, about the countries version, it's clearly doable: many users are able to complete COTW in less than 2:30, so they can achieve it. Everyone isn't in this position, but it's not impossible at all, even without cheating.
Well, the max I got on it is 1389 so far. And that was just by mentally recalling them in various geographic orders and groupings via a mental map. I've tried it a few dozen times by now, I think. Maybe half the time I get just a little over 1200.
I decided to put together an Excel spreadsheet of all the countries of the world so I wouldn't have to rely on memory. The first try I got like 1330 or 1340something which was better than all but 2 or 3 tries out of the probably 30+ I've made so far. So, with practice could conceivably get 1500+. This is with typing, however.
With cut and paste, who knows?
What constitutes cheating, however?
As far as this states quiz is concerned, I just got 560, which frankly really surprised me. A-O, plus Texas-Washington All typing. No cut and paste. I think that probably satisfies me for good.
Maybe I could do one for states, one day, if some users are interested.
But your score is already very good on that one too! Congrats!
I would say that cut and paste is even longer than just typing them.
Some users can code something to directly enter the answers without typing them, or even that stops the timer without removing points. That's cheating. But it's very rare on the site.
I created a new account for reasons of freshness and also because I wanted to start fresh with these Scrabble quizzes that you made, as well as some of the typing quizzes on here, just as a sort of record-keeper, like to see what my progress would be like if it were a "game".
On my 1899th attempt (yes, you read that right - 101 attempts short of 2000),, I finally broke ground that I hadn't broken before. I decided that with this new account, I would go in order from A-W, whereas with my old account, I skipped around a little bit, trying one approach or anotther, to try to get the highest score possible, although I had long since before gotten 5 stars. Well, this time, on my 1899th attempt (not including the over 500 attempts I made on my other account), I finally got past Virginia, which I had made it to and completed 5 times. This time I got all the way from Alabama and got Washington. I nearly got West Virignia, but flubbed the last 2 or 3 letters. So, 642 points. YAY!
I think I'll probably stop at 2000 attempts. Although part of the reason I've gotten better is "muscle memory" on the typing, how many more attempts would be necessary for me to get West Virginia, for example? 200? 300? And beyond that, Wisconsin? Another 500 on top of that? No thank you. Hahaha! I'm pretty masochistic, but I'm not THAT masochistic.
I know that perhaps the reason for these quizzes isn't to see how fast you can type, but they do definitely measure that. So, why not go with it, right?
Wow! That many tries? You are really motivated! And I have to congratulate you for your awesome progress. Thans for all your messages, it was very interesting and encouraging to followthe evolution of the score ad strategy of a quiztaker like you.
Got 49/50 states in the 50 seconds, the first time doing this. I went in alpha order from Alabama to Wisconsin. I finished at typing "Wy" for "Wyoming", then time was up. Oh wow. Maybe I will get all 50 soon, then?
WHOA!!! I FINALLY DID IT! I FINALLY ACTUALLY DID IT. OVER A FEW THOUSAND ATTEMPTS VIA 3 DIFFERENT ACCOUNTS, I FINALLY GOT ALL 50 IN 50 SECONDS! HUGE MOMENT!!!
Wow, amazing! I was first scary by discovering a completely capitalised comment in my notifications, but now I understand, that's completely justified. You have all my congratulations!
Don't forget to try (and why not nominate) the world version.

This is an observation, not a criticism. I enjoyed it.
All of A-M and all of O-U. 36 out of 50 states in 50 seconds. Not bad at all! Determined to kick butt or go out in dramatic fashion!!!
Not my first try, but trying over and over again, despite neuropathic difficulties, is not cheating. It is improving and honing and perseverance.

Cheers, and keep up the good work.
Keep up with this motivation!
